State of Scams in Nigeria - 2026

Nigeria cover pictureThis study of 1,180 Nigerian adults shows that scam exposure is widespread, with 84% of participants encountering a scam in the past year. While 49% say they are confident in recognizing scams, 54% still interacted with a scammer (80% of those exposed). Ultimately, 22% experienced financial or data loss, with only 4% reporting the incident to authorities. Among victims, the impact extends well beyond financial harm, with 74% reporting effects on their mental wellbeing, and 62% experiencing repeat scams.
