This study of 4,830 African adults shows that scam exposure is widespread, with 82% of participants encountering a scam in the past year. While 62% say they are confident in recognizing scams, 52% still interacted with a scammer (77% of those exposed). Ultimately, 21% experienced financial or data loss, with only 5% reporting the incident to authorities. Among victims, the impact extends well beyond financial harm, with 76% reporting effects on their mental wellbeing and 54% experiencing repeat scams.
