Why does the GASA North America Chapter exist?

Online scams continue to escalate across the United States and Canada, impacting consumers, businesses, and public institutions alike. Financial losses are rising year on year, but the broader cost is also measured in eroded trust, emotional harm, and strain on enforcement and support systems.

The GASA North America Chapter exists to convene leaders across sectors and drive coordinated action against online scams. By strengthening alignment between industry, government, law enforcement, and consumer advocates, we work to accelerate prevention, improve disruption efforts, and build a safer digital environment across the region.

What do we do?
We protect consumers in North America through research, collaboration, and real-time intelligence:

  • Virtual meet-ups and summits

  • Annual state of scams reports

  • Scam.org: Anti-Scam Hub for consumers

Information Sharing to Combat Fraud: Analysis of Statutory Permissions and Constraints

A new joint paper from ACAMS and the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) examines the U.S. legal frameworks governing fraud intelligence sharing — and finds that existing law permits significantly more sharing than most institutions currently act on. Drawing on legal research contributed by Akin, the paper offers a plain-language breakdown of where safe harbors, exceptions, and affirmative permissions already exist. Prepared for the ACAMS International Anti-Fraud & Technology Task Force and refined with input from GASA's member network, the paper is intended to spark dialogue and inform next steps for industry and policymakers alike. State of Scams in The United States of America - 2026

This study of 3,110 U.S. adults shows that scam exposure remains widespread, with 82% encountering a scam in the past year. While 86% say they are confident in recognizing scams, 43% still interacted with a scammer (56% of those exposed). Ultimately, 9% experienced financial or data loss, and only 4% reported the incident to authorities. Among victims, the impact extends beyond financial harm, with 59% reporting effects on mental wellbeing, and more than half experiencing repeat scams.
