About the event
We would like to invite you to the launch of the GASA Oceania Chapter, on Tuesday, 30th July 2024, at 13:00 NZST (01:00 CEST). You can join the virtual event by RSVP'ing on this page.
The goal of the meeting is to bring together all Oceania stakeholders for the first time to discuss the scope of online fraud in the region and discuss which steps we can take together to turn the tide on scams. The discussions will be led by GASA Managing Director, Jorij Abraham; Brent Carey & Andrea Leask of Netsafe New Zealand.
The Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) mission is to protect consumers worldwide against scams. We realize our mission by bringing together governments, law enforcement, consumer protection organizations, financial authorities and telecom providers, social media, Internet service providers and cybersecurity companies to exchange intelligence, network, share data, and define joint actions to protect consumers globally better from scams.
Globally, more than USD$1 trillion was lost to scams last year, affecting 1-in-4 individuals worldwide. This is only the tip of the iceberg, as only 7% of all scam victims report the crime to law enforcement. Clearly, fast action is required.
Netsafe has convened a meeting of interested parties in the Oceania region to discuss a proposal to establish an Oceania chapter of GASA. If the proposal is supported, the Oceania GASA chapter’s objectives would be aligned to the Global Alliance, with a specific focus on disrupting scams in the Oceania region. In isolation, our countries may struggle to affect systemic change in the fight against scams, but together, we can amplify our impact.
The proposed agenda is as follows:
